The Hinge Trophy, true to form, did not run as smoothly as it may have done due to weather constraints. The qualifier at Royal Cinque Ports was cancelled the evening before, but despite a somewhat inclement forecast for Sunday morning, Littlestone went ahead.
The early starters bore the brunt of the elements, but there was still some impressive scoring on display. Greg Diddams (Upchurch River Valley) and Harry Knight (Mid Kent) posted one-over-par 72s to finish second and third in the scratch event, respectively, but later starter, Matthew Lightfoot (Ashford), took full advantage of the improving conditions to shoot an excellent level par 71, the best score of the day.
Nett honours went to Chislehurst’s Nicholas Williams with a 69, closely followed by Declen Kirkham (Chestfield) on 70 and Matthew Gibson (Sundridge Park) on 71. A special mention to Haiden Matos (Dartford), who achieved the rare distinction of making a two at all four of the par 3s!
The top 25 finishers, along with the 25 lowest handicaps from the Royal Cinque Ports start sheet, now qualify for round 2 at Prince’s on the 11th January.
A very big thank you to David and his team at Littlestone Golf Club for hosting Kent Golf for this competition once again (and for the excellent breakfast), and an even bigger thank you to our intrepid referees and volunteers – Chris, Marilyn, Allan, Kathie and Ian – for venturing out in the rain and helping the players negotiate their rounds in what turned out to be a very good pace of play.
Well done all!
