Robin Young Trophy Final report

Date published: 14 Mar 2025

There may have been a cold north wind blowing across the links at Sandwich but, mercifully, it stayed dry as our top thirty from last month’s qualifier at Littlestone battled over 18 holes of stroke play for the Robin Young Trophy.

There was fierce competition in the handicap event with four men breaking the strict par of 70 and home player, Philip Whittaker, was unlucky to miss out on the prizes on countback. Taking third spot on nett 69 was Adam Clarke (Mid Kent), with Chestfield’s Peter Newman finishing second with a 68. Taking the handicap spoils, after an impressive level par back nine, was Frank Adam (Langley Park) on countback from Peter.

In the scratch event, Martin Farbrace (Sene Valley) came third, and with two players tied at the top on 73, the countback rule once again came into play. Canterbury’s Steve Robson was the unlucky one this time, and despite a fighting birdie on the last, it was a lost ball on the par three sixteenth that did the damage. So, even with an annoying double bogey on the closing hole, Bearsted’s Ross Capeling became our very deserving Robin Young Trophy winner for 2025 after a solid round of golf. Ross also won the qualifier at Littlestone three weeks ago – what a great way to start the season!

Our thanks go to The Royal St. George’s Golf Club for once again hosting this prestigious county event and also to Alex Young for coming along to present his father’s trophy - a gesture which was very much appreciated.

Our gratitude goes, as ever, to our trusty President, Chris Reynolds, for acting as starter, and our referees – Ken, Peter and Jon – for braving the elements with their usual good humour.
