Robin Young Trophy Qualifier report

Date published: 26 Feb 2025

Despite many Kent courses being closed due to the heavy weekend rain, Littlestone Golf Club escaped relatively unscathed, and with some last-minute use of the squeegee and a couple of flags moved to higher spots on the greens, we were able to go ahead with our inaugural Robin Young Trophy Qualifier.

A full field of 60 senior men, aged 53 and above, played 18 holes of medal from the white tees in a strong and difficult wind. The last three holes – a tough finish at the best of times – really bared their teeth and the field was a cumulative 220 over par for those holes alone (+105 on 16, +56 on 17, and +59 on 18), an average of 3.66 per player. An honourable mention to Knole Park’s Ian Towell, who was the only man to play the last three holes in level par!

The best gross score of the day was 76 by Ross Capeling (Bearsted), who just pipped Rochester & Cobham’s Bob Florence on countback. Third place went to home player John Crabtree, with a 77, on countback from Danny Holmes (Rochester & Cobham).

Taking the nett honours was Lullingstone’s Per Mortensen, who only stepped in as a late reserve and took full advantage of the opportunity to shoot a nett 71. Andrew Sait (Chestfield) was a close runner-up on 72, with P.D. Whittaker (Royal St. George’s) rounding out the prize winners on 73.

Congratulations to the top 30 scratch scores who have made it through to the final at Royal St. George's Golf Club on Thursday 13th March, where we can but hope for slightly calmer conditions.

Our thanks go to Littlestone GC for hosting this new event and to the players for supporting it.

Finally, a special thank you to our President, Marilyn Brown, for braving the elements to start the players off, and our referees – Ian, Allan, Kathie and Mark – for giving up their time to assist so ably.
