Bright but chilly with a stiffening wind was the order of the day at Royal St. George's Golf Club, where thirty juniors were invited to play in the ninth edition of the Statham Trophy.
With ten players in each team, representing either the North, South or Central region of Kent, the best eight stableford scores would be counted for the team event with prizes also for the best boy and best girl.
Taking top honours for the boys was Jasper Nutley-King (North Foreland) with a splendid 39 points, four points better than his nearest rival, and the top scorer for the girls was The London Club’s Mia Bolton with 35.
Third place in the team event went to the Central team on 244 points, and the runners-up, on 247, were the team from the North. Therefore, that meant that the team from the South took the shield with a winning score of 251. Congratulations to Jasper Nutley-King, Jack Swift (also North Foreland), Sanjana Gullipalli (Canterbury), Kings Hill’s Luke Antoun, Ashton Bean (Prince’s), Teagan and Oscar Ford (Bearsted), and the Wildernesse trio of Scott Antoun, Sebastian Bullock and Phoebe Bright.
Our thanks go to our County President, Chris Reynolds, who braved the cold to start them off, and our doughty referees – Allan, Ian and Cheryl – who braved the cold to help with rulings and ball-spotting.
Finally, a big thank-you to The Royal St. George’s Golf Club for once again hosting this event and for making us so welcome. Another very enjoyable day at the links!
