2024 has been another busy year for Kent Disability Golf, especially with a few exciting new partnerships being formed. There is plenty to celebrate on this International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
In March, our Junior Development Officer Tim Ewer held the first VI (visual impairment) golf event of the year at Dartford Girls Grammar School, this was the inaugural event with our partner STLS, Specialist Teaching & Learning Services.
During the first week in April 2024, we held four events for youngsters with Autism, in conjunction with World Autism Acceptance Week. Events were held at Knole Park GC, Kings Hill GC, Tudor Park GC, and Upchurch River Valley GC – our thanks to the dedicated Pros at those clubs.
At the end of April, we hosted another successful VI session at Lower Grange Farm in Maidstone, again with STLS, many thanks to Shelley Robinson and Richard Gardner for their assistance and support with this exciting tie-up.
In June, we attended an event for East Kent Mencap. Our JDO Tim Ewer and two Kent Golf volunteers set up some golf stations, including the ever-popular inflatable golf net, and all attendees had a go at golf, many for the first time. The afternoon ended with a huge singing session. It was a very successful day, and we hope to be invited to join Mencap for more events in 2025.
In September, we hosted our annual Family Disability Golf Day at Stonelees GC. This was again organised and run by Gary Bason, who does a fantastic job at Stonelees and runs a dedicated disability academy. Many thanks to Gary for his tireless work with disabled youngsters and also to the staff at Stonelees for their continuous friendship and hospitality.
We plan to do more events for Disability Golf in our Centenary Year 2025.
We would like to thank Variety Golf, who support our disability academies and events. Variety Golf comprises a group of charitably minded golfers who make it their business – and pleasure – to play competitive golf at some of the most beautiful golf courses in the UK, whilst raising funds to help less fortunate children who, through no fault of their own, are unable to enjoy a quality of life which the rest of us take for granted. Find out more.
Thank you to the Golfway company for providing equipment and to all the volunteers for giving up their free time and helping at our events.
Last but not least, an ambassador to our Disability Academies Kipp Popert (Wildernesse) retains his number 1 position in gross rankings of The World Ranking for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD) after his four wins on the G4D Tour, win at the G4D Open, win at the Irish G4D Invitational, and a win at the U.S. Adaptive Open this year. Kipp was also the first ever golfer with cerebral palsy to compete in a full International Series event on the Asian Tour in November, inspiring the next generation of disabled golfers.
