After a summer of battling through the rounds in the Kent Vets Club Champion competition, Lullingstone Park and Dartford were the two teams left standing, and they contested the final at a sunny but blustery West Malling.
With no halves allowed in the matches, it always had the potential to produce an exciting finish - and it didn't disappoint! In match number one, the Dartford pair of Brian Walker and John Martinez just got the better of their Lullingstone counterparts, Adrian Barker and Ricky Stanton, by beating them on the 17th. However, the balance was soon restored when Tony Maslin and Steve Billings (Lullingstone) defeated Dartford's Franz Clark and Ian Palmer on the same hole. Match number three was all square after the regulation 18 holes, so sudden-death was required, and with a true Captain's performance, Martin Stuart (Dartford), birdied the 20th to give himself and playing partner, Richard Hennessy, the deciding game. Commiserations to their opponents, Clive Stanton and Colin Dale, who fought gamely until the end.
We thank West Malling Golf Club for their hospitality and Peter Long for refereeing the final. Congratulations to Dartford on their well deserved victory.
