Triple Shield match report (U13 boys)

Date published: 16 Aug 2024

One of the most used cliches to describe golf matches is 'golf was the winner'.... but I would without hesitation use that phrase to sum up the last two days for the Kent Boys U13 Team.

We went to glorious Kingswood Golf in Surrey on Saturday for practice rounds on a windless day to find out where, and more importantly where not to, go off each tee. All of our players shot their handicap or lower, it was a great day of team bonding, with the lead group applauding the following group's approach shots all the way round.

Four of our 2023 winning team players were unavailable due to a combination of a Woodhall Spa National Competition and 'father time' ticking meaning they were too old, so we had the pleasure of inviting four rookies to the team. They were so proud to receive their Kent kit and loved the Kent Golf match balls.

The next day, Kingswood was a different course, very windy, same pins, but greens had been cut and rolled, with fairways and fringes also being cut, a different challenge.

On paper, Surrey looked the stronger side with handicaps from 1.2 to 9 for their eight players, plus a bit of home advantage, and although our line-up went from 1.1 to 12.9 we gave them a great run for their money only losing narrowly 5-3. So, although we convincingly beat Sussex 7-1, the overall points meant that Surrey won 23-20, with Kent in 2nd and Sussex in 3rd place.

A special mention to our four rookies, Will Henderson from Knole Park, Jeremy Li and Charlie Martin from Sundridge Park, and Caleb Twyman from Prince's, who all played incredibly well and battled to the end with some great golf, in fact Caleb shot 76 (4 over) including 5 birdies...

Many thanks to Kingswood GC for a warm welcome and for presenting the golf course so well today, and thanks to the lovely parents and supporters who were behind us all day yesterday and today, great to hear you all round the course!

We are already in talks with Surrey & Sussex regarding U13 friendlies next year, great news.
