Junior County Match Week report

Date published: 16 Aug 2024

It was a very enjoyable four days at Crews Hill Golf Club for Junior Girls County Week 2024, where the weather was beautiful.

We played matches against Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, and Middlesex (7 singles), and it was particularly tough going on Monday, when the temperature was really high. We played Sussex in the morning, winning 5 matches to 2, and Hampshire in the afternoon, losing 5½ matches to 1½.

On Tuesday we played Middlesex in the morning and won 5½ matches to 1½ and then played our 18 hole Stableford competition in the afternoon. We were unable to defend our title won last year.

So, going into the final day on Wednesday, we knew what we had to do.

Hampshire were unbeaten, having won 3 of their matches and halving against Surrey, so we couldn't catch them for 1st place (having already lost one of our matches).

Surrey had won 2 of their matches and halved against Hampshire so if we could beat Surrey (which was certainly not out of our reach), we would be runners-up in the tournament.

Added to the mix, if Surrey did beat us, they would then be on the same points as Hampshire, so it would go to a countback on individual matches won, and it worked out that Surrey needed to beat us by 5½ matches to 1½ to tie, and 6 matches to 1 to win the tournament outright.

In the end, we came so close to our goal to be runners-up, but sadly just lost out in a very tight match, with Surrey winning by 4 matches to 3.

Hence, Hampshire were crowned this year’s winners, with Surrey taking the runners-up spot. Congratulations.

Our girls tried so hard and gave of their best on all of the days, and we were very proud of them all.

One special mention has to be made about Skye, who won all her 4 matches, taking out some of the top players from the other counties. Well done Skye.

The girls bonded very well as a team and had a lot of fun in between the matches and lots of valuable experience was gained by them all, especially our rookies.

Our Squad was as follows:

Emma Kwan, Chart Hills
Skye Fontanelli, Faversham
Teagan Ford, Bearsted
Anouk Woodhouse (Junior Girls Captain), Sene Valley
Chloe Samuel, Dartford
Sienna Thumwood, Dartford (rookie)
Bella Watson, Langley Park (rookie)
Selina Bartarya, Chelsfield Lakes (rookie)
Claudia Carlotti, Canterbury

We thank Crews Hill Golf Club who showed us all wonderful hospitality where nothing was too much trouble, and Middlesex Golf who organised everything very efficiently, all leading to a smooth and well-run tournament.

Junior Girls Team Manager, Cheryl Power would like to thank Junior Girls Team Coach, Anna Smith for all her invaluable advice and help for the girls during the week and also Marilyn Brown, our County President, and Suzie Ford, for all their help and support for the team, which was very much appreciated by all. Cheryl would also like to thank Anouk for her excellent leadership and example as this year’s very popular Junior Girls Captain.

We now look forward to travelling to Sussex and Worthing Golf Club next year for Junior County Week 2025.
