Junior Championship 2024 report

Date published: 31 Jul 2024

What a fabulous day we had for the 2024 Kent Junior Championship at Hever Castle, and what fabulous golf we had to go with it! With our biggest ever field of 50 in the 36-hole scratch event and 32 in the 18-hole stableford, it promised to be a busy and exciting day.

Over a long and testing par 72 layout, Justin Chenu (Chelsfield Lakes) had two extremely impressive rounds of gross 66 and 69 to beat his nearest challenger by 13 shots and become Kent Boys Champion. Justin started the year with a handicap index of 3.2 and has now reduced this to +1.9. At only fourteen years of age, what a terrific achievement. Runner- up was last year’s winner, Haiden Matos (Dartford), with 77, 71, and Sundridge Park’s Kieran Parkins took third on 76, 75.

In the Girls' competition, Emma Hiu Lam Kwan (Chart Hills) became our Champion with a 36-hole score of 162. A very worthy winner – well done Emma! Anouk Woodhouse (Sene Valley) came second on 169. The Rochester & Cobham Park trio of Abe Bignell, Archie Jones, and Kobi Smith won the team prize by 6 shots from last year’s winners, Dartford.

Emma and Justin will now go on to represent Kent in the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September, and a team from Rochester & Cobham Park will do battle in the Junior Champion Club competition in a little over two weeks’ time. We wish all our representatives well and know that they will do us proud.

In the 18 hole stableford competition for handicaps of 9.5 and above, the honours went to Dartford’s Quinn Jameson with 41 points, just pipping Drew Love (Sittingbourne & Milton Regis) on countback. Third place was taken by Elliot Swift (Boughton) on 40 points, again on countback from Lexi Donohue (Faversham).

The G. Hayward Trophy, which is awarded to the player who has shown the most potential, went to Jeremy Li (Sundridge Park), who has progressed through our Kent Golf Pathway. This time last year, Jeremy was playing in our Invictas competitions and didn’t have a handicap. Now he is playing off 12.8 and is still only 9 years old. Fantastic stuff!

Our thanks go to Hever Castle Golf Club for their tremendous hospitality. A warm welcome was given to all, and they are great supporters of junior golf.

A big thank you also to our Kent Golf referees and volunteers who gave so generously of their time and helped to make a busy day run so smoothly.

Next year’s Championship will be on the 6th August at North Foreland – definitely a date worth getting in the diary!
