Summer Stableford & Foursomes report

North Foreland were our generous hosts for the Kent Golf Summer Stableford and Foursomes, and what a fabulous day they laid on for us. The weather was perfect for golf, and the course was playing hard but fair.
Quick out of the blocks in the individual stableford - and winning himself a brand-new shiny pair of golf shoes - was Colin Beattie (Gillingham) with 39 points, just beating Lydia Hoare (Redlibbets) into second place by one point. Third place went to Alfonso Perez (Birchwood Park) with 36 points, on countback from fourth-placed Alan Turner (Hever Castle), who just pipped his clubmate, Paul Johnson, and Bearsted’s Steve Crocker.
After a tasty chicken curry feast at lunchtime, our forty competitors returned to the course to do battle for the Starter’s Trophy. With an impressive 39 points in the foursomes format - and making off with a couple of new golf bags - the worthy winners were Jackie Hawes (North Foreland) and John Samuel (Royal Cinque Ports), who won by four from Ali Chapman (Prince’s) and Annette Fraser (Rochester & Cobham Park). Rounding out the top three, with 33 points, were the Nizels’ pairing of Jackie and Martyn Taylor, on countback from Malcolm Gofton and Darren Leech (West Malling) and Colin Abbott and Duncan Anderson (Birchwood Park).
Showing off their skill with a short iron and winning the nearest the pin prizes were Steve Cocker (Bearsted) on the 5th, and Littlestone’s Lucie Moxham on the 11th.
Our thanks go to County President Marilyn Brown for acting as Starter both morning and afternoon and to Kent Volunteer Helen Johnson for helping to run the day so efficiently.
