Women's Senior Championship report

Date published: 19 Jul 2024

Faversham Golf Club were our hosts for the 2024 Women’s Senior Championship, and what terrific hosts they were! The course was presented in tip-top condition, and they even remembered to order in some fabulous weather. With our biggest ever field for this event - 50 players - it promised to be a very enjoyable two days.

Taking the lead in the scratch event on day one was Kim Morris (Sundridge Park), whose four-over-par 75 contained an impressive five birdies. This was good enough for a five-shot lead over clubmate Tita McCart and Nizels player Nicola Jones. In the Handicap Plate, Lesley Walter (Prince’s) held a one-shot lead over Sheerness’ Liz Owsley, courtesy of a fine nett 67.

Day two saw an improvement in most players’ scores and an excellent level-par front nine by Finella Unachukwu (Pedham Place) helped her along to a round of 75, which propelled her up the leaderboard to take third place in the scratch. Not for the first time, Kim and Tita had a ding-dong battle for the title, with Tita managing to reduce the deficit by one after nine holes. However, a timely birdie from Kim at the tenth restored the five shot cushion and steady play on the way in would give her a second successive round of 75 and the Senior Women’s Championship for the fourth time.

In the Handicap Plate, Lesley maintained her good form and tacked on a nett 66 to her day one 67 to win by an impressive seven strokes from Carol Turl (Nizels). Nicola Jones rounded out the top three, just missing out on countback for the runner-up spot.

The Over 60s scratch winner was Sharon Port (Lamberhurst), with Liz Owsley taking the nett prize.

In the Over 70s division, Pat Morecroft (Nizels) took scratch honours with Littlestone’s Val Field winning the handicap.

Our thanks go to Faversham Golf Club for their wonderful hospitality and to their Club President, Pam Bentley, for attending the presentation.

We wish Kim all the best when she travels to Woodhall Spa for the England Golf Champion of Champions event on the 7th and 8th of September where we know she will give her best and represent Kent with her usual pride and determination.

The 2025 Women’s Senior Championship will be held at Chislehurst Golf Club on the 14th and 15th of July.
