Orange Tees – Bringing a New Option at Wildernesse Club

Date published: 14 Jul 2024

Since the introduction of the WHS, Wildernesse Club has been thinking a lot about how to make golf more accessible for its Members and its future Members. Thanks, in part, to golf’s traditions, the Club has always operated with white, yellow, and red tees: white and yellow being available to men; and red being available to women. This has always struck me as unfair and discouraging, so we recently adopted a new tee set – the Orange Tees. These are a hybrid of the yellow and red tee sets, using 11 yellow tee positions and 7 red tee positions. The resulting yardage is 5,943, almost precisely halfway between the yellow and red total yardages.

This new tee set serves two principle purposes: i) to give male golfers (particularly those of a certain age) a slightly shorter option; and ii) most importantly, to give female golfers a degree of choice. Female golfers should have options when it comes to which tees they play from – as male golfers always have – and this seemed to be the perfect solution. Our yellow tees are also rated for female golfers, but the hybrid orange tees are where we hope change will come most effectively. The extra distance will allow female golfers to test themselves on a longer golf course but it will hopefully allow mixed pairings to happily play from the same tees, without any danger of one or the other feeling like they are playing from a tee set that is not intended for them.

We’ll be monitoring the orange tee use during the season and hope that they will prove a popular addition to our course.
