Men's Senior Championship report

For the second year running the Men’s Senior Championship was plagued by inclement weather and the blustery winds and intermittent downpours made for a very testing first day at Sheerness Golf Club.
Best round of the day went to Steve Robson (Canterbury) with a very impressive one-over-par 73, which gave him a three-shot lead over 2021 Champion, Danny Curtis (Knole Park). Just behind in third place were Mark Haffenden (Langley Park) and last year’s winner, Richard Partridge (Wildernesse), on 77. Day two wasn’t exactly ablaze with sunshine, but it was at least dry. With Steve, Danny, and Mark having the same score on the front nine, the situation remained the same as it had been overnight. It was nip and tuck over the back nine until Steve birdied 16 and 17 to take control. He finished like a true champion with a beautiful approach shot to the last, then proceeded to hole his five-foot putt for a closing round of 72 and the Senior Championship title. Many congratulations on a splendid performance!
Danny Curtis took the runner-up spot on +6 with Mark Haffenden coming in third on +7. Despite not winning the main prize, Danny had a successful day as he won the Handicap Cup by one shot from Steve and the Over 60s Godden Salver by one shot from Mark. Taking the honours in the Over 70s Salver and getting his name on yet another piece of silverware was our own County President, Chris Reynolds (Littlestone).
In the A Division Championship for handicaps 6.5 to 16.4, Paul McAllister (Redlibbets) took the Darkins Trophy by one shot from Frank Witt (Lullingstone), with Westgate and Birchington’s Trevor Turnbull coming in third. Home player Robert Whitington took the Over 70s scratch prize for the second year running. The Division B winner was Des Burnett (Birchwood Park), with Wayne Lewis (Nizels) taking the runner-up spot.
We thank Sheerness for their excellent hospitality and their enthusiasm for hosting Kent Golf events and Club Captain, Mark, for attending the presentation and receiving a County Championship Commemorative Plaque on their behalf. Steve will now go on to compete in the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa on the 14th and 15th of September and we wish him all the very best in his quest to bring the title back to Kent.
